This giant eyeball in Las Vegas, Nevada, is actually a dome-shaped building that displays massive moving images on its exterior. The new structure, called the Sphere, houses an arena for concerts, sporting events, and even eSports tournaments. It is considered the largest spherical building in the world.
Construction on the Sphere began in 2018 and cost $2.3 billion to complete. The Sphere’s round shape was created by building a frame of interlocking steel triangles. Triangles give the large structure strength by helping distribute its weight.
More than 1.2 million LED lights cover the Sphere’s 54,000 square meter (580,000 square foot) exterior. These lights can be programmed to create enormous images, transforming the Sphere into a blinking eyeball, spinning basketball, or rotating moon!
