War of the Worlds

Can humans survive an alien invasion?

AS YOU READ, THINK ABOUT how real science influenced the stories that author H.G. Wells wrote.

THE SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL

The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells was published in 1897. At that time, many people believed Mars was home to an alien civilization. That’s because a few years earlier, an astronomer had observed what looked like a network of channels on the planet’s surface. People began to speculate that Martians had engineered these structures. The idea of intelligent life on another planet prompted Wells to dream up a frightening scenario: What if these aliens invaded Earth?
