Recently, partygoers may have noticed something missing from celebrations in Laguna Beach, California. Starting in 2024, a new law banned the sale of balloons within the city and prohibited the use of balloons in public areas, like beaches and parks. It also became illegal to purposefully release balloons into the air.
This ban was passed in response to concerns about how balloons affect the environment and ocean life. Birds, sea turtles, and other marine creatures can mistake deflated balloons for food and choke on them if eaten. Animals can also get tangled up in balloon strings.
Residents of Laguna Beach can still buy balloons outside the city and use them at home. But city officials recommend that the balloons be kept inside to prevent accidental releases.
