CLOGGED ARTERY: Daly found that cholesterol can build up in blood vessels.
Hearts are a symbol of Valentine’s Day. That makes it a perfect time to remember Marie Daly, whose scientific research continues to keep many hearts healthy. In 1947, Daly became the first Black American woman to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry. In the 1950s, she was one of the first scientists to show that too much of a waxy substance called cholesterol could clog arteries. Blocking the blood flow through these vessels can contribute to heart attacks, which damage this vital muscle.
Daly’s research laid the foundation for understanding and treating many underlying causes of heart disease. Her story is truly powerful, says Sibrina Collins, a chemist and director of Eastern Michigan University’s STEM Ed Institute. “Daly’s groundbreaking achievements still impact our society today,” says Collins.
