In July 2025, two skyscraper-sized icebergs drifted closer and closer to Innaarsuit, a tiny seaside village on an island off the coast of Greenland. “You could throw a rock at them from the coast,” says Dennis Lehtonen, a photographer who lives in the town. He used a drone to capture images of the looming icebergs, which broke off from the massive ice sheet covering Greenland’s surface.
The government issued a warning: Residents should stay away from the icebergs to avoid falling chunks of ice. “Occasionally, pieces of ice broke off, creating a sound like thunder,” says Lehtonen. The icebergs sat next to Innaarsuit for three days before slowly floating away.
