In 2012, a tiny jumping spider named Nefertiti blasted off into space aboard a spacecraft headed to the International Space Station (ISS). This science laboratory orbits about 400 kilometers (250 miles) above our planet. It’s home to a rotating crew of astronauts from different countries. There, they carry out experiments that aren’t possible on Earth. They’ve investigated how plants grow, how water acts, and how human bodies change in microgravity. Nefertiti would help them study whether a jumping spider could learn how to hunt in the weightless environment of space.
