Last October, Adidas unveiled Trionda, the official soccer ball for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The name, which means “three waves,” represents the event’s host nations: Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The ball’s design is based on a tetrahedron—a pyramid with four triangular faces. “Imagine squishing and twisting a tetrahedron to make it into a sphere,” says John Eric Goff, a sports physicist at the University of Puget Sound in Washington. The ball also has grooves and a rough surface. This texture is meant to reduce the slowing force of drag, or air resistance. It prevents the ball from spinning unpredictably and allows it to sail much farther than if it were completely smooth. GOAL!
