RAINBOW OF COLORS

Neon artists combine tinted glass, glowing fluorescent coatings, and the gases of various elements to create the many colors of neon lights.

Blue lights get their color from a mix of argon and mercury.

Green is produced when argon and mercury gases shine through yellow glass.

Yellow is made using helium gas inside yellow glass.

Orange lights use neon gas and a green fluorescent coating.

Pink is created with neon gas and a blue fluorescent coating.

ANALYZE IT: Neon is lighter than air and nonreactive. How might these properties explain why neon is so rare on Earth?
