Starting in summer 2018, visitors to New York City will be able to take a spin on the world’s tallest Ferris wheel. The massive New York Wheel, now under construction on Staten Island, will stand 192 meters (630 feet) tall. The wheel will be able to carry 2,200 riders per hour to dizzying heights for a magnificent view of Manhattan.

Steel cables 8 cm (3 in.) thick will support the wheel’s rim and the cars that carry riders. Construction will involve lifting the wheel’s 1,300-ton axle nearly 90 m (295 ft) into the air. “There are certain limits to what physics will allow,” says Rich Marin, the chief executive officer of the project. “We are pushing those limits.”
