Not everyone perceives color the same way. Around 5 percent of the population is colorblind. People who are colorblind have a hard time distinguishing between certain colors, like green and red. One researcher is now helping people with this condition better enjoy a common activity—watching TV.

Klára Wenzel, an engineer at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary, teamed up with electronics company Samsung last fall. Together, they developed SeeColors—a smartphone app that adjusts TV displays for people with color blindness. Users of the app first take an on-screen test. Based on the results, the app boosts certain colors, making them easier to see. “It’s one of the only ‘tailor-made’ solutions for colorblind people,” says Wenzel.
