Design a Litter Collector
In Trash Collector, you read about a machine designed to remove litter from waterways. Now come up with your own device to clean up unsightly trash polluting an area where you live.
STATE YOUR OBJECTIVE
Choose a location known to have a litter problem. Do research and collect data to learn about the types of trash found there and why those kinds of trash might accumulate there. Write a general overview of a type of device that could reduce the amount of litter. Include the criteria and constraints you’d have to meet for your design to be successful.
BRAINSTORM SOLUTIONS
Think about how you could turn your idea into reality. Come up with several concepts for your machine. Write out step-by-step plans, draw diagrams, or make models for each design.
PLAN AND IMPROVE IT
Pick your best idea from step 2. Write a detailed explanation of how your machine could solve the problem you wrote about in step 1. Discuss your plans with a classmate and offer suggestions to improve each other’s designs.
OPTIMIZE YOUR DESIGN
Based on the feedback you received in step 3, make adjustments to your design. Keep modifying your plans until you’re satisfied.
ANALYZE IT: How might you alter your design to effectively collect trash in a different environment?
