A pet bird named Snowball became famous when online videos showing him dancing to the beat of pop songs went viral. The videos even caught the attention of researchers. After studying Snowball’s behavior, they discovered that the cockatoo had invented 14 original dance moves. “Snowball does body-rolls, head bangs, and ‘vogues,’” says R. Joanne Jao Keehn, a cognitive neuroscientist who studies the brain at San Diego State University. “The sheer number of dance moves is surprising.” Snowball’s ability to groove shows that humans aren’t the only species that can spontaneously move to music.
