If you ever wanted to try designing a video game, Super Mario Maker 1 was the game for you. Released in 2015, it let players create levels in the style of Super Mario and share them with people around the world. But earlier this year, Nintendo announced it was shutting down the servers, or centralized computers, that stored all the game’s user-generated data.
Thankfully, a group of fans called Team 0% was already racing to complete all player-made levels before they were deleted forever. On April 5, 2024—just three days before online support ended—the group accomplished their goal. It “seemed like the most fulfilling way to say goodbye to the game,” says Black60Dragon, a founding member of Team 0%.
